Final evaluation workshop and a cross-border mission within the joint EU AENEAS — UNHCR project “Strengthening the Protection Capacity in the Republic of Belarus”
On April 14, 2009, the final workshop for evaluation of implementation results of the joint EU AENEAS — UNHCR project “Strengthening the Protection Capacity in the Republic of Belarus” will take place in Riga, Latvia.
It is planned to evaluate the outcomes of implementation of the 1st project stage (2007—2009), exchange positive experience related to implementation of international technical assistance projects on migration and asylum, and present the goals, tasks, activities and the work plan for the 2nd stage of the project (2009—2011).
The workshop will be attended by representatives of law-enforcement authorities of the Republic of Belarus (the State Border Committee and the Department on Citizenship and Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs), the European Commission, UNHCR Regional Representation in Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, UNHCR and IOM country offices in Belarus and Latvia, Belarusian nongovernmental organizations: the Belarusian Red Cross Society, the Belarusian Movement of Medical Workers and the International Public Association of Scientific Research, Information and Educational Programmes “Evolutio”. In addition, representatives of border/migration authorities of Latvia, an NGO from Romania, the ECRE, the CBCP Secretariat and the Centre of Social Initiative PROVIDUS will participate in the event.
On the eve of the workshop, on April 13, 2009, the participants will perform a cross-border mission to the Urbany-Silene border checkpoint where they will familiarise with the activities of Belarusian and Latvian border officers connected to illegal migrants and asylum seekers on the Belarusian and Latvian sides of this checkpoint.
On April 15, 2009, representatives of Belarusian and Latvian border authorities will meet with representatives of the European Commission and UNHCR to discuss prospects for preparation and implementation of joint projects related to border issues through different technical assistance initiatives of the European Union, namely AENEAS, ENPI and TAIEX.
