An outstanding geologist, mineralogist, geographer and ethnologist, Rector of the University of Chile and a member of many scientific societies

If you look at the map of Chile in South America, you will find the city of Domeiko on it, and just to the north - the mountain range of the same name. The geologists know the mineral domeykite, the botanists – Viola domeykiana , the zoologists – the shellfish Nautilus domeykus.

But not all experts know that all this is named in honour of Ihnat Domeyko, who was born not far from the village of Mir (now Korelichi district) in 1802. After the suppression of the uprising he fled to France and then to Chile. There he was active in research activities, and later he was elected as the rector of Santiago University, after death he was declared to be a national hero of the Republic of Chile.

During his lifetime I. Domeyko discovered great number of deposits of silver and cooper, wrote 130 scientific studies which were published in French, German, Polish, English, Russian, Spanish and other languages. He entered the world of science and left his mark in various fields and production spheres: mineralogy, physics, chemistry, metallurgy, geography, botany, geology, pedagogy, ethnography and zoology.

Ihnat Domeyko died in 1889.
