Oginski was engaged in political activity in 1789. Since 1790 he was the ambassador of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in Holland, since 1791 – in Britain, in 1793-1794 he was appointed as the treasurer of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1794 he took part in the Belarusian-Polish uprising in the lead of the battalion of rangers formed by himself. Graph Michal Oginski wrote his undying masterpiece in the very 1794. And its real name «Farewell to the Fatherland» due to the fact that at that moment he was leaving his homeland and, as he thought, was leaving forever. After the defeat of the uprising he emigrated to Constantinople where he became an active figure of the Belarusian-Polish emigration, then he moved to Paris. Later he gained a position of the politician at the court of the Russian Emperor Alexander I (in 1810 Oginski became the senator of the Russian Empire).
